Can you share a Claude project with a colleague?

Yes, if you are both in the same Claude Team or Enterprise organisation. You share the project with Can view or Can edit access, and your colleague gets its knowledge and instructions. Each person’s chats in the project stay private unless they share one, and Anthropic describes Claude’s memory as each person’s own. On Free, Pro and Max, the most you can share is a snapshot of a single chat.

Which Claude plans can share a project?

Team and Enterprise. On those plans a project can be private, open only to the people you invite, or public, open to everyone in the organisation. An owner can turn project sharing off for the whole organisation, and on Enterprise for specific roles. Sharing with a group is in beta on Enterprise.

On Free, Pro and Max, projects are yours alone. You can still share a chat, either with people you invite by email or through a public link: they see a snapshot of the messages up to that point, without the files you attached.

The new version of projects, in beta in Claude Code for some Pro and Max accounts, is single-person too. Anthropic’s docs say such a project “belongs to one user” and can’t be shared, and it isn’t on Team or Enterprise yet.

How do you share a Claude project?

  1. Open the project and click Share, to the right of the project name.
  2. Add people from your organisation by name or email. To add several at once, paste a list of email addresses; on Enterprise you can also add a group.
  3. Choose Can view or Can edit for each person.
  4. Click Share. Each person gets an email and finds the project under “Shared with you” on their Projects page.

To open a project to everyone in the organisation, go to General access in the same menu and change “Only people invited” to “Everyone at [your organization]”.

Archiving a shared project keeps its members and their access. To cut someone off, remove them in the Share menu.

What does your colleague see, and what stays private?

They see the project’s knowledge and instructions, and they can start their own chats in it. They don’t see yours. Claude’s help centre is plain about it: even in a public project, “your chats within that project will be private and inaccessible to other members of your organization unless you manually share them.”

To show a colleague a chat, share it from the chat’s Share button. On Team and Enterprise the link works only for people in your organisation. It is a snapshot of the messages so far; anything you send afterwards stays private until you update the snapshot.

One more limit: Google Docs from Drive can be added only to a private project’s knowledge. Claude turns that option off for shared projects.

Does a shared Claude project share memory?

Anthropic describes Claude’s memory as each person’s own. Claude keeps a separate memory for each project, generated from your chats; you review it in Settings > Memory, and an organisation owner can’t view or edit it (admins can still export it with the organisation’s data). When you ask Claude to search past chats, it searches yours, within the project you are in. Anthropic’s pages on memory and project sharing never describe members sharing one memory.

So what a colleague worked out in their chat stays in their chat. Claude’s help centre points to the fix: “Context is not shared across chats within a project unless the information is added into the project knowledge base.” Someone with Can edit access has to write it up and add it. Can you share a Claude Cowork or Claude Code project?

For Cowork, yes, on Team and Enterprise: Cowork projects take Can view and Can edit access like any other Claude project. Two things differ. A Cowork project made from a folder on your computer stays on that computer and isn’t saved to your Claude account. And Anthropic is merging Cowork and chat into one Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max first with Team and Free to follow, so the labels on your screen may change.

In Claude Code, the project is usually a repository, and you share it the way you share code: through git. The repository’s CLAUDE.md travels with it, so everyone’s Claude Code starts from the same instructions. The new projects beta inside Claude Code is the exception: as above, each of those projects belongs to one person.

What if your colleague uses ChatGPT?

A shared Claude project reaches only people in your Claude organisation. A colleague who works in ChatGPT would need a seat in that organisation and would have to work in Claude to use the project; the ChatGPT they use every day can’t open it. ChatGPT has shared projects of its own, built differently (members there see each other’s chats), and those reach only ChatGPT accounts (sharing a ChatGPT project with someone).

So a team split across the two keeps either two copies, with someone carrying each change across, or one project outside both that each person opens from their own AI. Claude adds such a project as a custom connector (an MCP server) on every plan: Free allows one, and on Team and Enterprise an owner adds it first.
